May is simply a glorious month in Gibraltar. While now and again there may be some cloud, and even the occasional shower, May is bursting with colour and vibrant with the burgeoning warmth of summer.
For travellers visiting Gibraltar for the first time, there is so much to see and do that making out a basic plan might be helpful. Whether you’re arriving at Gibraltar’s cruise terminal at North Mole, have stepped off a coach after crossing the land border with Spain, or have disembarked from a yacht at one of the Rock’s luxury marinas, here are some suggestions for making the most of a brief visit:
- Start your day with a tour of the Upper Rock Nature Reserve. This is a superb, time-efficient way to familiarise yourself with some of the best views of the Mediterranean, learn about the Rock’s fascinating evolution and military history, and enjoy the warmth of the sunshine while taking in the beauty of Gibraltar’s natural landscape.
From the top of the Rock, the spectacular scenery stretches out for miles around, across the Bay towards the Strait, south towards the mountains of Morocco, and north towards the Sierras of Andalucía. There’s nothing quite like it in the world.Meet the world famous macaques at the Apes’ Den and delve into the labyrinthine depths of the Rock’s underground galleries, and wonder at the breath-taking beauty of St Michael’s Cave.
- After the tour, return to Gibraltar’s City Centre, full of historical buildings and a unique mix of architecture. A stroll through Gibraltar’s old town brings a blend of past flavours in the quaint corners, patios and passageways. Make a small detour to the Museum in Bomb House Lane, perhaps to marvel at the ancient Moorish baths which form parts of its structure. Art lovers will find exhibitions in some of the town’s nooks and crannies, not to mention the City Art Gallery housed in the splendid City Hall in John Mackintosh Square.
- Wander through Main Street under the wrought iron, flower laden balconies of the building facades and find yourself treated to some of the best shopping opportunities in this corner of Europe. You may well find yourself tempted by some excellent VAT free shopping, with high end jewellery and electronic equipment vying for your attention alongside popular fashion brands and select wines – just to name a few of the retail offerings.
- As you round off your day, dine in one of Gibraltar’s many restaurants – perhaps at Casemates Square with its backdrop of the old city stretching upwards towards the Moorish Tower of Homage, or at the nearby Ocean Village Marina where fine dining is by the sea, with wonderful west-facing views.
With many events staged in various locations throughout the year, planning ahead may mean you can indulge in a jazz festival, fashion shows, dance exhibition, food fests…and so much more. One short visit to Gibraltar, can mean a lifetime of return trips!
